There are three complex sentences that use subordinating conjunctions:

1. Don’t join the team unless you are willing to work hard.

4. I won’t see a movie until I’ve finished reading this book.

5. Juliana loves to tap her toe while she listens to music.

A complex sentence is a sentence that is made up of an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. While an independent clause can stand by itself, a dependent clause, which is introduced by a subordinating conjunction, cannot stand alone as a sentence.<u> In sentence 1,</u> the independent clause is "Don't join the team" and the dependent clause is "unless you are willing to work hard".<u> The subordinating conjunction is </u><u>"unless"</u>. Moreover, <u>in sentence 2</u>, the independent clause is "I won't see a movie", the dependent clause is "until I've finished reading this book" and<u> the subordinating conjunction is </u><u>"until"</u>. Furthermore, in sentence 3, the independent clause is "Juliana loves to tap her toe", the dependent clause is "while she listens to music" and <u>the subordinating conjunction is</u><u> "while"</u>.

A complex sentence has a main clause and a subordinating clause. The subordinating clause is generally introduced with a subordinating conjuction. This links the two clauses. The complex sentences that use a subordinationg conjunction are the following : ( the underlined clauses are the subordinating clauses and the words in bold type are the subordinate conjunction).

  1. Don’t join the team <u>unless</u><u> you are willing to work hard</u>.
