Now imagine that you find a rock with fossils of old bones near a big lake. Back in the Precambrian time there might not have been water there but instead trees and a forest. Over time those trees are going to rot because the Tectonic Plates moved and went lower then water level so then water started coming up and rotting the trees. In those next 100 years this went on until there were no trees and there was the big lake that you are now standing by.
