In this passage, the causal factor was the monkey's paw and its effect was the death of the only son of the couple.

In this passage, we learn of a couple, Mr. and Mrs. White, who was given a magical item known as "Monkey paw" by a Soldier friend. The potent item was handed down by a Fakir- a religious priest who said that a person could make 3 wishes with it.

The soldier, however, warned the couple that there were possible disastrous consequences of using the magical item but they collected it nevertheless. They wished for 200 pounds and their wish was granted the next day, only that the money was compensation for their son's death at the factory where he worked. This resulted in so much grief for the couple.

So we can conclude that the magical monkey paw resulted in the death of the only son of the aged couple.
