There are two types of cellular respiration, these are aerobic and anaerobic respiration. Anaerobic respiration can occur in the absence of oxygen, but for aerobic respiration to occur, oxygen must be present. The process of aerobic  cellular respiration involves a series of oxidation and reduction reactions and the oxygen molecule serve as an electron donor and acceptor during this process. Thus the stages of cellular respiration can only occur if oxygen is present. <span />
