Notice how Maddy quickly realizes that the other swimmers where quite young; as well as the fact that she noticed the two young kids being able to demonstrate basic swimming skills. We know this is most likely to be the answer because no where in the text does it mention that she is shy, unwillinging to swim in the shallow end, or is unable to do a cannonball!
