There's no clear answer for this, but I would say that most people feel pressured by society- even if they don't notice it- to follow along and stay in line. Another theory is that, in larger crowds/ when many people are doing something, people may feel less guilty/more inclined to do things that are immoral or unethical; especially when made anonymous.
