They are both parties which celebrate a girl's coming of age.

Sweet sixteens are the more Americanized parties, where at age 16, a girl usually has a big party.

Same is for quinceañeras, which celebrate a girl who is 15 in the Latin American community.

They are both big parties, involving lots of family, as it is a big deal to turn that age.
