Functional art is generally applied art - art created for use, designed to serve a purpose and with an aesthetic in mind. It's art that serves a function, but is also designed artistically for purpose of displaying beauty.

Art that serves as function as well as aesthetic beauty. An example of this would be a fruit garden. They are pleasing to look at, pleasing to walk around in, and enjoyable to sit in. They also produce food which makes it functional rather than purely aesthetic

They do chemical examination to see how old is an artefact. Also based on previous objects, which were already dated by using a comparison can be determinated if the object is newer or older. 

In addition, the scientist dig all the time so based on the excavations they make a thesis about what the live in this place was. If the same objects are found in another country for example , that means this people have traveled.. etc
