Mehmed II the Conqueror took Constantinopole in 1453, the capital of the Byzantine Empire. It was the end of that old empire. The city was renamed as Istanbul (its present name). His desire was to make it a great city with a multicultural presence. He deported Muslim and Christian populations in Anatolia and forced them to settle in Istambul, and allowed the Greek Orthodox Church and Jewish rabbis to run temples. After the city´s fall, he had made the Haga Sophia cathedral into a mosque.
