I think that in order for a Holocaust to happen the suppression of a specific group of people is required. So I guess that we could say that extreme racism or the non-acceptance of a group of people that are different or have different beliefs leads to a Holocaust.
They were seen as a threat because they went against the teachings of the Church. The new idea was that the Earth revolved around the sun instead of the sun and the whole universe revolving around the Earth
