I would say the most important consequence of the limited French populations in New France and Louisiana is the French loss of the French and Indian War that made the French lose their American colonies except for Haiti at the time.

Explanation: A lot of the French people in Metropolitan France in the colonial age didnt have the financial capabilities to populate New France. Less people means less troops able to fight. There were much more British people in the thirteen colonies and in the Hudson Bay. The British beat the French with numbers.
