My best interpretation of the quote would be that someone is deliberately misinterpreting someone else and twisting their words and meaning.

From the quote, "...a false impression of wisdom, that does not represent the argument of the author", it is quite clear that a person is deliberately acting unaware of the meaning of the words of a person or twisting the words and meanings.

Has anyone ever read "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett. If so can you help me? QUESTION IN DETAILS

I think Mary and Colin´s transformation is gradual.  Mary and Colin both become  different people. Mary grows up and is less spoiled, and Colin outgrows his mean ways when he goes outside and sees the secret garden realizing he wasn´t injured as previously thought. As for evidence I am currently re-reading the book now.
