When Archduke Franz-Ferdinand was assassinated in sarajevo,  The Austro-Hungarian Empire sent an impossible ultimatum to Serbia to meet. Russia mobilized, and guaranteed the independence of Serbia. When Serbia refused the ultimatum, Austria-Hungary declared war on her, and Russia declared  war on Austria-Hungary 6 hours later.
