Answer: It seemed as if she was alone on the streets.

Explanation:

The narrator describes her experience of going to the carnival. She points out that the streets are empty at night, by using the word <em>'deserted'</em>. <u>Her surprise becomes obvious when she describes the same streets during the day as </u><u><em>'hectic'</em></u><u>.</u> There are many people outside as the stores are open. The author realizes that, in that particular moment, nobody is there. She does not hear the ordinary sounds of a living city. Because of the silent atmosphere, she hears the distant echoes of music coming from the park.
