Susan B. Anthony was a women's rights activist in America and a social reformer who was a pioneering figure for the women suffrage movement in America. She was convicted of unlawfully participating in the presidential elections of 1872 of which her speech was based on.
In the opening paragraph of her speech, Susan B. Anthony stated that her aim was to prove that she did not do anything wrong in participating in the election. She stated that she had been <em>"indict[ed] for the alleged crime of having voted at the last presidential election, without having a lawful right to vote"</em>.
