In 1946, Maria married Balanchine, and on year later, she joined his ballet company, the New York City Ballet. The company became very popular---and so her "enchanting," "brilliant," and "electrifying." She became the first world-class prima ballerina in the United States. A prima ballerina is a gifted dancer who is featured in ballets as a star performer.
