Read the excerpt from It's Our World, Too!: Young People Who Are Making a Difference. When they entered the board's meeting room

, Neto was terrified. They were alone with the ten white men who were the members of the Marsing school board. "I couldn't believe I was really doing this," Neto recalls. "Then I heard Baldy say, 'Neto wants to talk with you about the football team.' "So I just started. I told them I was quitting and why. I told them word-for-word what I had heard. Only one of them looked like he was really listening. When I was finished, they thanked me for coming, but they didn't say they would do anything about it. I went home thinking, Well, at least I tried. Now they can't say nobody told them." Which detail from the excerpt best indicates that one of the author’s purposes in writing It's Our World, Too!: Young People Who Are Making a Difference was to create suspense?

Answer: The excerpt: Neto was terrified. They were alone with the ten white men who were the members of the Marsing school board. "I couldn't believe I was really doing this," best indicates the suspense that the author wanted to create.

Explanation: When writing a story, suspense must be used to surpass the reader's expectations. This is achieved by controlling information. In the text, the author started out describing Neto's nervousness and how scary the scenary was, using words as "alone" and "ten men". Moreover, Neto's words lead the leader to the peak of suspense, letting them wonder about the end of the events. The author best indicated his purpose by leaving what Neto had to say for the end.

There was too much noise, so we couldn't hear the speech<br> -&gt; ...
Romashka [77]

Question:

<em />

Combine the sentences correctly using 'so...that':-

<em>There was much noise. I couldn't hear the speech.</em>

<em />

<em>A. There was much noise so I couldn't hear that the speech.</em>

<em>B. There was much noise so that I couldn't hear the speech.</em>

<em>C. There was so much noise that I couldn't hear the speech.</em>

<em>D. So much noise there was that I couldn't hear the speech.</em>

Answer:

The correct answer is C) There was so much noise that I couldn't hear the speech.

Explanation:

Besides the fact that A, B, and D are grammatically incorrect, let us start by looking at the structure of the sentences.

The sentences comprised of two independent clauses:

  1. There was much noise.
  2. I couldn't hear the speech.

But there is something wrong with the first sentence so let's see if any of the "so" or "that" can fix it.

Rules guiding the use of "So"

"So" is an intensity or degree adverb that modifies or qualifies adjectives and other adverbs. For example:

  • <em>You are </em><em>so</em><em> kind</em>
  • <em>She is </em><em>so</em><em> tidy</em>

Given the above, the best places to insert "so" in a sentence would be at the start and before "<em>much</em><em>"</em>.

To use it at the start without violating grammar rules would require a comma immediately after, such that the sentence would read thus:

<em>So, there was much noise.</em>

<em></em>

The sentence above, however, is still incorrect, and here is the reason why.

By adding "so" to "much" we are obeying the rule of "so" as a degree adverb.

Which when used without "much" can be used in sentences this way:

  • He is so intelligent.
  • She is so beautiful.

When combined with "much" it can be used properly right before <em>singular uncountable</em> nouns. In sentence 1 above, the singular uncountable noun there is noise.

Other examples of <em>singular uncountable</em> nouns are:

  • Truth
  • Rain
  • Honey

Now that we have fixed sentence 1, it should read thus:

1. There was <em>so</em><em> much</em> noise.

Let's look at sentence number 2.

"That" is a conjunction. One of its uses is for the connection of two independent clauses.

In summary, the correct form of the sentence after introducing "so" and "that" is:

<em>There was so much noise that I couldn't hear the speech.</em>

Cheers

Considering the excerpt's content, the statement that best conveys his idea that continued practice of enslavement threatens the existence of America itself is <u>option D.</u>

The is because the statement “<u>that all men are created equal; that their Creator endows them with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness</u> " is the fundamental basis upon which the United States of America was established.

Therefore, if the fundamentals are not being operated upon in practical to some selected people, then there may be a danger to every ordinary American in the future and the whole country at large.

Hence, in this case, it is concluded that the correct answer is option D.

Alone and palely loitering?

The sedge is wither'd from the lake,

And no birds sing.4

'O what can ail thee, knight-at-arms,5

So haggard and so woe-begone?

The squirrel's granary is full,

And the harvest 's done...

Pale warriors, death-pale were they all;

They cried—"La belle Dame sans Merci

Hath thee in thrall!"40
