I know i am kinda late but here is the other one Dont judge a book by its cover. In the book gandalf mentions there is more in biblo than what meets the eye. He is saying dont judge by the outside but whats inside. Thornin and co. did not listen to this until biblo had the ring.

like the first answer here said friendship is more important than treasure. Biblo gave the arkenstone to the king even though he knew thorin wanted it really badly i hope i am not spoiling this to anyone....SPOILER ALERT! Okay so in the end thorin resives the arkenstone because they had won the war of the 5 armies, and the more kingly person bard handed it to him.
