Texas and California which are now recognized as most populous, well-developed States of USA with long coastlines and a border with Mexico were once under the jurisdiction of the Mexican Empire. 
Texas was considered considered part of Mexico's territory and they had their revolution on 1836. However, Mexico don't want to be under the control of the US government and have fought for their  independence in 1821 -- then became a republic in 1824. After Mexican Independence, California fell under the jurisdiction of the First Mexican Empire.
