In Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Commander Farragut is an American Naval officer. Verne is thought to have borrowed the name from the Civil War-era Navy admiral David G. Farragut. Under orders from J.B. Hobson, Secretary of the Navy, Farragut is appointed the captain of the Abraham Lincoln, a high-speed frigate. The Abraham Lincoln is a three-masted warship that is powered by a combination of wind and steam power. Their mission is to hunt down the narwhal that has been attacking ships across the seven seas. The narwhal is a marine mammal and type of whale nicknamed 'the unicorn of the sea.'
