Les - How do these lines from Eliot's poem make reference to Chaucer's verse, while at the same time making the exact opposite
OlgaM077 [116]

Answer:

Both commemorate April, but Eliot is negative about April while Chaucer is

positive

Explanation:

Geoffrey Chaucer's (1343-1400) "The Canterbury Tales" (Prologue) starts by mentioning April positively in a sense that in the month of April rain waters the dry ground  (from March) to water flowers' roots. At this happy time people are in good mood, and they want to go on religious pilgrimages.

<em>"Whan that Aprille with his shoures sote </em>

<em>The droghte of Marche hath perced to the rote, </em>

<em>And bathed every veyne in swich licour, </em>

<em>Of which vertu engendred is the flour;"</em>

However T.S Eliot (1888-1965) starts his masterpiece poem "The Waste Land" (1922) by mentioning April negatively by saying;

<em>"APRIL is the cruellest month, breeding </em>

<em>Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing </em>

<em>Memory and desire, stirring </em>

<em>Dull roots with spring rain. </em>

<em>Winter kept us warm, covering </em>

<em>Earth in forgetful snow, feeding </em>

<em>A little life with dried tubers"</em>

Presenting a single or definite interpretation of Waste Land would be injustice to this poem. But in simple words, Eliot means to say that April is the cruelest of the months because life has to come out of its comfort zone (hibernation and sleeping) in winter. April is also cruel because its flowers, rains stir a past memory and create a longing for the past.

The Holocaust of World War II resulted in _______.
Alja [10]

Answer:

The Holocaust of WWII resulted in millions of deaths of Jewish people and years of oppression for Jews.

Explanation:

It was caused by Adolf Hitler's pure hatred of the Jewish people, and fun fact, when he was a boy, he wanted to be a priest. Sorry, I know that's totally unrelated to the question.

Read the poem.
LekaFEV [45]

The line <em>"I will make inseparable cities with their arms about each other’s necks"</em> suggests that democracy will create unbreakable bonds among people.

The poem "For You, Democracy" was written by Walt Whitman on the issue of democracy. The poem focuses on the theme of peaceful coexistence between nations, races, democracy for all.

  • In the poem, the speaker declares <em>"I will make the continent indissoluble."</em>
  • The word "democracy" is not directly stated or declared but that is what the speaker seems to be suggesting in all his statements.
  • Especially, in the line <em>"I will make inseparable cities with their arms about each other’s necks"</em>, he personifies cities as humans, with arms around each other.
  • This statement is also suggestive of democracy as something like a bond that will bring cities together, keep them close to one another.

Whitman addressed the theme of democracy as the main issue in his poem. He also expressed his idea of how democracy can be, together with a strong bond, peacefully coexisting. And the correct answer for the given line of the poem is the <u>first option</u>.
