Durante la Guerra Fría, Corea del Norte estaba respaldada por la Unión Soviética, China y sus aliados comunistas, mientras que Corea del Sur era respaldada por los Estados Unidos y sus aliados occidentales. La división de Corea por parte de las potencias externas se produjo al final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, a partir de 1945, y las tensiones estallaron en la Guerra de Corea, que duró desde 1950 hasta 1953.
