After the Revolutionary War, british colonies in former America were divided in two groups: patriots and loyalists.

Patriots were people who strongly desired to become independent from Britain. They felt that British taxation was unfair, since they were not represented in Parliament.

On the other hand, Loyalists considered it proper to stay under British rule and keep their British citizenship. Some of them held that they were better this way, some were fearful of the British  and others had economic interests.
