Eduardo crept along the side of the house — he didn't want his mother to see him. Her reaction to being startled was one of the

funniest he had ever seen. He tried to startle her at least once a week because it provided a nice laugh for both of them. Tonight, his mother was hanging laundry on the clothesline in the backyard, and the dangling clothes and linens provided yet another means of camouflage.
He crept closer, then popped out from behind a bedsheet and screamed, "Boo!"

As Eduardo's mother's arms flailed in the air, she let out a whoop and ran toward the house.

Eduardo collapsed on the ground in hysterics. He laughed so hard, tears started rolling down his cheeks. His mother walked back over to her son with a smirk on her face.

"Just watch out! You're next!"
Which statement best summarizes the passage?
A. Eduardo's mother is scared by her son's outburst, and even though she runs away, she comes back smiling.
B. Eduardo's action is inconsiderate because his mother is completely caught off guard, and it seems as though he doesn't care about how she reacts.
C. Eduardo carefully camouflages himself in order to sneak up on his mother.
D. Eduardo sneaks up on his mother while she's hanging laundry and scares her. She runs away in fright but returns with a good-natured threat.

Answer:

D. Eduardo sneaks up on his mother while she's hanging laundry and scares her. She runs away in fright but returns with a good-natured threat.

Explanation:

This summary accurately describes what happens in the passage. His mother is obviously startled and runs away, but comes back to her son with a smirk on her face and a witty, good-natured threat to keep himon his toes. It does not specifically state that she was smiling.
