In the following sentence, one or both of the underlined adjectives and adverbs are in the wrong form. Select the answer option
Marina CMI [18]

In the sentence "American music from 1900 to 1950 was notably for its harmony and melody, which served the public well," there is indeed one mistake. The option with the correct form is:

c) American music from 1900 to 1950 was notable for its harmony and melody, which served the public well.

 • Let's focus on the first part of the sentence first, which is "American music from 1900 to 1950 was notably for its harmony and melody."
 • The complete subject of that part is "American music from 1900 to 1950."
 • That subject is followed by a linking verb, which is the past form of to be, "was".
 • Linking verbs are usually not followed by adverbs. They are followed by adjectives that modify the subject.
 • "Notably" is an adverb. We must change it into an adjective for the sentence to be correct. The equivalent adjective is "notable".
 • The correct sentence would then be: "American music from 1900 to 1950 was notable for its harmony and melody."

 • Now, let's take a look at the second part of the sentence, which is "which served the public well."
 • Here, we also have an adverb, "well", following a verb, "served".
 • But, in this case, it is not wrong to use to adverb. "Served" is not a linking verb. It is an action verb, and it can be modified by the adverb "well".
 • Therefore, there is no mistake in the second part of the sentence.

With the information above in mind, we can conclude that the correct option is letter C. American music from 1900 to 1950 was notable for its harmony and melody, which served the public well.

The Struggle for Freedom Over History
Studentka2010 [4]

There have been numerous pivotal points in American history for equality and basic human rights. Some of the greatest influences in how we function today, equally and safely, come from cases and people such as: The Brown vs Board of Education case, Sojourner Truth, and Rosa Parks.

The Brown vs Board of Education case happened in 1954 in Topeka, Kansas. This was a huge turning point for African Americans who face segregation in American public schools. The outcome found that segregation in schools was a violation of the 14th commandment, and was unconstitutional.

Sojourner Truth was an African American women born in 1797; as well as a feminist and women's rights activist. She was born into slavery, but eventually escaped with her new born daughter in the year of 1826. She fought very hard for the cause(s) that he believed in until her death in 1883.

Rosa Parks is a well know African american women who is often referred to as "the first lady of civil rights". She took part in the Montgomery Bus Boycott, (1955), in which she refused to move to the back of the bus because of her race. She went to jail, but stayed active in the equal rights movent(s) once out.

America, as well as a lot of the world, has come incredibly far since these times of segregation. We have all of these moments in history (and more!) to show for it.

Word Study Units 4-6
Novosadov [1.4K]

Answer:

1. Council members deplored the outbreak of violence in areas close to schools.

2. Several of the old buildings still retained the ornate ceilings and banisters that were typical of the eighteenth century.

3. During economic hardships, most people find prodigal spenders offensive.

Explanation:

The corresponding and appropriate vocabulary for the bolded words in the given sentences are changed as follows-

1. In replacing "grumbled about" with "deplored", they imply the same attitude but with much more strong opposition. While mere grumbling may suggest complaints and disinterest, 'deplored' gives a sense of strongly disapproving of the plan.

2. The word "stylish" can be replaced by "ornate" as they both imply the same decorative sense of the ceiling. But at the same time, "ornate" gives the sense of a more beautiful, better-decorated piece than the simple word "stylish".

3. The word "big" in describing the spenders is plain and can just describe any shopper who spends a lot. But the use of "prodigal" in describing the spenders gives the sense of unnecessary spending. This word gives more voice to the disapproving tone about such spenders.
