The Tibetan Plateau was a difficult place to live in for ancient peoples. Crops couldn't be grown because it was too cold and dry. The grasses, on the other hand, provided food for yaks and other livestock. Traveling through this region to Inner China was difficult due to the cold, rocky plateau and high mountains.
