If you remember mtDNA can be traced in a single person for generations, this means that with your mtDNA, you could see who else had those specifics (or rather similarities) hundreds of years prior to you, and hundreds of years ahead of you.

This is important because if you come across a sample of unknown mtDNA, you can match it to the correct person (or rather match it to a known mtDNA).  You can even match an unknown mtDNA to one found in a crime scene...
