In developing countries children are needed as a labour force and to provide care for their parents in old age.

In these countries, fertility rates are higher due to the lack of access to contraceptives and generally lower levels of female education.

High fertility can impose costly burdens on developing nations.

In rural areas children are needed as labour on farms. In urban areas they are needed to work in the informal sector to earn money for their families.

Women have a large number of children as there is a high level of infant mortality
