Answer: b. God must be cruel or a figment of the imagination

Explanation:

Elie Wiesel was a holocaust survivor that has spoken at length about the atrocities he witnessed in the concentration camps as the Nazis effected their "Final solution" to exterminate all Jews.

Mr. Wiesel saw things in the camp that were so cruel that he wondered why God would not stop them. To rationalize why God would not stop them, he came to a decision that God either did not exist or was cruel for allowing such things to happen.

Mr. Wiesel has since said that he still believes in God however and it is because of this belief that he was so angry that God did not save those who were killed in the holocaust.

Convert direct speech into indirect speech
Mashutka [201]
General rules for changing direct speech into indirect speech. Omit all inverted commas or quotation marks. End the sentence with a full stop. If the verb inside the inverted commas/quotation marks is in the present tense, change it into the corresponding past tense.

Which statement best describes the theme of this stanza?
Airida [17]

This particular excerpt makes part of the bigger poem "The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls", written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow between 1807 and 1822. In essence, this particular poem makes reference to the process of life, death and rebirth, through the image of the ocean, its movements, its activities and its effects on life. The poem is short, only three stanzas long, and most of it shows the sadness of life as it comes and then ebbs away, marking with it the time limitation on life.

In this particular excerpt of the poem, Longfellow is making reference to how natural events, like the flow of the sea, affect human beings, their lives, and links the two things, human life, and nature, by giving an almost human characteristic to the ebb and flow of the sea. This is why, the correct answer here is B: Human beings are challenged by events in the natural world.
