How are the themes of "The Colored Soldiers" and "War Is Kind" different?
Degger [83]

War is kind is definitely all about a war. The title is an irony what really a war is. The real thing is that war is very unkind and is happening always because there people who send soldiers to wars not thinking about their deaths. On the other hand, The Colored soldiers is a poem to praise black men who served the Army during the civil war. These soldiers fight for freedom from slavery even though they know the risks of their actions and that it may cause them harm.

explain how children were treated during the Victorian time period and the conditions they lived in. How is this shown in Charle
IrinaVladis [17]

During Victorian times, childhood was very different from today's. Children in general did not have a lot of communication with their parents, and toys were quite rudimentary.

Rich children were raised and educated by nannies, who were sometimes rather mean. On the other hand, poor children lived in smaller houses or single rooms. Their parents made them work long hours to help pay the bills. Working conditions were difficult - children had to work in dirty and risky circumstances for very little money. For example, in the mining and clothes industry, factories, chimney sweeping and prostitution.

If a Victorian child had to work in the teaching field now , only a wealthy boy who has been to school or university would have the chance to teach there. A girl would have to be educated at home in order to get a job as a nanny - in those times women were not allowed at university.

Think about the selections by European writers you have read in this unit. Do these writers seem to have concerns that are diffe
belka [17]

Answer:

The European writers have read in this unit seem to have slightly different concerns that from those of writers from the Americas. Other writers from the Americas seem to focus more on conflicts with individuals. In the short story“Dogs Don’t Bark” we see a conflict between father and son. Or in “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” we see conflict come against Huck and his buddy Jim.However, European writers seem to have more of a concern with conflicts as a whole group or nation; most of the European works in this unit has been political in some way. Both “Rhinoceros” and “And Yet the Books” are about Europe under Nazi power. “The Nobel Prize” is also about Russia under censorship and taking away the freedom of speech. While other authors focus on the individual, Europe thinks of the whole or group.
