"By the Waters of Babylon" is a short story written by Stephen Vincent Benet and it was published in 1937. This story is about an post-apocalyptic world in which a man, John, struggles to find the "Place of the Gods", following the beliefs and customs of his people, the hill people. John, and his people, believe that dead people are truly gods. Many are the adventures faced by this character as he undertakes what his father used to believe was a spiritual pathway, but that in truth was a journey to find the forbidden place.

The resolution of the story, the point at which all conflicts are resolved and explained, occurs when John returns to his people, the Hill People and, convinced by his father, that telling people the truth might be harmful, decides to state that : B: they must rebuild society slowly and carefully.
