"Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold." Why are these words of special importance to the story?

It refers to the poem that Ponyboy reads to Johnny. One line says "Nothing gold can stay." which means anything good will eventually come to an end. Johnny is telling Ponyboy to stay gold, or innocent.
