He wanted a quick and easy finish to the war against Japan.
He wanted to save/prevent the loss of as many American lives as he could.
He wanted the war to end before the USSR became involved. If the USSR came to aid the US, they would possibly want some territorial gain after the war ended. Truman wanted to avoid this.
It is possible that Truman wanted to show off the power of the United States with the dropping of the bomb. By being the first to use an Atomic Bomb, America would become superior to the USSR and other countries around the world and increase their world status.

Why did Lincoln deliberately downplay the slavery aspect of the Civil War?
TEA [102]

Answer:

Lincoln deliberately made his Emancipation Proclamation limited as he did not want to alienate slave holders in the Union or Confederacy. He also hoped that some slave states would voluntarily come back into the Union. A military victory was needed as Lincoln did not want the Proclamation to look like the last gasp of a failing government.

The right answer is C. Congress had the power to make decisions but not to enforce them.

The Articles of Confederation, ratified in 1781, provided only the appearance of national authority. Final power to make and execute laws remained with the states. The Confederation Congress had a number of responsibilities but little authority to carry them out. It had full power over foreign affairs and Indian affairs as well as the western territories. But with no courts and no power to enforce its resolutions and ordinances, having to rely on requisitions from the states, which state legislature could ignore. The Confederation had neither an executive nor a judicial branch; there was no administrative head of government (only the president of Congress, chosen annually), and there were no federal courts.
