Put the word(eaves) in a complex or compound sentence (hint:this word means the lower overhanging edges of a roof, rim) & ( m
zubka84 [21]
Example of complex sentence: She asked her husband to make sure to paint the roof and to make sure to not leave any spots in the eaves unpainted.

<span>A complex sentence is a sentence containing a subordinate clause or clauses. This means that there is an independent clause (which means it can stand as a sentence by itself) and a dependent clause (which means a clause that cannot stand as a sentence by itself because it will  not make sentence). In the example above, the independent clause is '</span>She asked her husband to make sure to paint the roof' and the rest is the dependent clause.

Compound sentence: She used to love going up to the roof and sitting with her feet dangling by the eaves because the stars could clearly be seen from there.

A compound sentence is a sentence with more than one subject and predicate. In this example, there are 2 subjects: she and stars. There are also 2 corresponding predicates.

Which lines in these excerpts from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice are examples of free indirect speech?
Lina20 [59]

<span>When looking at literature, direct speech is easily discernible because of the quotation marks seen before the quotation.  Indirect speech, however, is not so easily discernible because there are no quotation marks that make it easy for readers to see where the speech is.  There are, however, ques that clue readers in on where indirect speech begins as indirect speech in literature is where what someone said is being discussed, described, or reiterated.  Words to look out for could be “he said,” “she tells,” “all chanted,” “most talked about.”  While there are descriptions of what someone was thinking, there are no descriptions of speech.  As such, and with this in mind, there does not appear to be any sort of indirect speech included in the excerpts provided.  </span>

Identify the verbs in this passage by clicking on linking verbs, main verbs or helping verbs.

"Hiking through these mountain ranges is very challenging." The active verb is "is". There is also a gerund, "hiking" which serves as the subject of the sentence. The subject clause is "Hiking through these mountain ranges", so even though "hiking" is a verb form, a gerund, it is not the verb in this sentence; it is part of the subject clause.

The rest of the passage contains other types of verb clauses, so you need to study those until you understand them! (:

Difference between the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act.<br>39 POINTS
PolarNik [594]

Answer: The 1964 Civil Rights Act was Congress's most expansive civil rights law ever passed. It included systematic steps to abolish segregation in Jim Crow and counter racial discrimination. The 1965 Voting Rights Act eliminated obstacles to black francs in the South, prohibiting poll taxes, literacy tests, and other initiatives that essentially prohibited African Americans from voting. Segregationists sought to prohibit the state level from enforcing federal civil rights legislation.
