The story was published in 1927 and it is about war in Italy. The narrator remains unnamed and he played soccer before his injury. At some point in the story, he mentions that Italian seems to be easy to speak and that discouraged him to learn the language. When the narrator says so to the major, he suggests the speaker study Italian grammar, which the narrator finds very difficult to understand.
