The nature of the villagers transformation was given a hint in the story's subtitle "A Tale for Children" through the action of the people towards Esteban. Just like kids, the villagers were attracted to Esteban's handsomeness. This symbolized their respect for him. When they finally dumped his body, they vow that in memory of Esteban, they will transform the village into a place that was worthy for Esteban. They believe that someday Esteban will float back to them. This shows the villagers' innocence, just like a child.
