The once-great Soviet Union fell apart due to the radical reforms the union’s leader, president Mikhail Gorbachev, put in place during his six years as the leader. Cuban leader, Fidel Castro, in a televised address he made in December 1961, addressed the people and commented that communism would remain a very prominent force in the politics of his country, Cuba.  

Some analysts were of the opinion that Castro re-affirmed his support for communism because he wanted to get more Soviet assistance.
