The Roman Empire was divided in two, the Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire; thanks to it's location the Eastern Roman Empire lasted from 330 A.D. to 1453. The emperor Constantine I settled the empire on the colony of Byzantium, so the empire became known as the Byzantine Empire, it was known as the economic, military and cultural leader of Europe until it fell to the Ottoman army.
