Select the correct text in the passage. Which detail best supports the inference that Simion feels unconcerned about being caugh

t cheating? The Test by Shanti S. Flaherty I'll never pass this trigonometry final, Simion thought, as he pored over the seemingly endless formulas he needed to know for tomorrow's exam. He wrote them out, repeated them aloud, and made up mnemonic devices, but nothing helped—he repeatedly drew a blank whenever his sister quizzed him. What was he going to do? He had to pass this test—there was no way he was going to spend his summer taking another math class! There was only one solution left, "I'll have to cheat," Simion thought aloud. "But how? We aren't allowed to have our phones, or even our own pencil and paper during tests, so how can I sneak the formulas in?" Simion pondered the problem, turning the possibilities over in his mind, thinking of all the ways he could get caught, but then he had an idea: I'll write the formulas on the bottom of my shoes; no one will see them there! So Simion spent the rest of the night carefully transcribing the formulas he needed onto his shoes. After several hours, and just fifteen minutes before he had to leave for school, Simion finished, then changed clothes, put on his "lucky" shoes, and ran out the door. Once the bell rang, Simion casually strolled to class. His teacher quickly checked everyone for contraband—cell phones and cheat sheets—then everyone sat down and began. Simion intermittently crossed his legs, propping one foot on the opposite knee to check his notes. He was almost done with the test when his teacher appeared out of nowhere, looming and staring pointedly at his shoes. Simion was silent as Mrs. Franks took his exam paper and wrote a big, red letter F across the top then took the exam to her desk. Simion hung his head until the bell rang a few minutes later. As the other students filed out and placed their papers on Mrs. Franks's desk, he could tell they saw the F she had written on his paper because they all looked back at h

Answer:

1: Balances the original author's claims

2: Challenge

3: Challenge

4: Qualify

5: It helps you prepare to challenge the author's claim.

6: The student is challenging the author's claim.

7: The student is defending the author's claim.

Explanation:

Qualifying a Claim: When we qualify a claim, we clarify it by adding some more information or by restricting claim's scope. After qualification a claim becomes more acceptable and balanced even for those who earlier slightly disagreed with that claim. Qualifying a claim includes qualifier words such as “some” or “many” or “most” or “often” etc. These words usually replace "all" and "always".

Challenging a Claim: It means entirely or partially disagreeing with claim. Disagreeing even with a specific element of the claim means challenging it.

Defending a Claim: It means entirely agreeing with a claim without any qualification.

Bissinger states, "It was too ugly for him and the land itself bore no secrets nor ever
blagie [28]

The imagery on this line reflects Mike's dislike of the city and all that it represents to him.

We can arrive at this answer because:

  • "Friday Night Lights" shows how Mike was sad and dismayed by everything when his father and brother died.
  • He was an athlete and knew that his brother and father would want him to play for the team.
  • But he doesn't want to stay in the city anymore, because it's melancholy and nothing makes him want to stay there.

In this case, the author uses imagery to point out that pretending that Mike wants to be part of the team was very ugly to him and the land he grew up on and which he no longer wants to be on.

Answer: Though an international clean-up is needed, the solution is not as simple as cleaning laundry.

Explanation:

A paradox is a statement which might seem absurd at first, but turn out to have certain point. In literature, it is often used to make the reader think about a new idea.

In "Homework", Allen Ginsberg conveys the idea that many countries need a clean-up. In fact, he begins the poem by stating that he wants to wash Iran. The message the author wants to express is that there is a state of political and social unrest, which threatens our environment and nature. However, a clean-up is not a solution to this problem, as the situation is not that simple. Through suggesting an international clean-up, the author calls for his readers to pay attention to this problem, and think of a real-life solution to it.
