One of the purposes of Mark Twain’s “Taming the Bicycle” is to entertain the reader. Which sentence in this excerpt uses humor t

o achieve this purpose?
We examined the machine, but it was not in the least injured. This was hardly believable. Yet the Expert assured me that it was true; in fact, the examination proved it. I was partly to realize, then, how admirably these things are constructed. We applied some Pond's Extract, and resumed. The Expert got on the OTHER side to shove up this time, but I dismounted on that side; so the result was as before.

The machine was not hurt. We oiled ourselves up again, and resumed. This time the Expert took up a sheltered position behind, but somehow or other we landed on him again.

He was full of surprised admiration; said it was abnormal. She was all right, not a scratch on her, not a timber started anywhere. I said it was wonderful, while we were greasing up, but he said that when I came to know these steel spider-webs I would realize that nothing but dynamite could cripple them. Then he limped out to position, and we resumed once more. This time the Expert took up the position of short-stop, and got a man to shove up behind. We got up a handsome speed, and presently traversed a brick, and I went out over the top of the tiller and landed, head down, on the instructor's back, and saw the machine fluttering in the air between me and the sun. It was well it came down on us, for that broke the fall, and it was not injured.

In Shirley Jackson's "The lottery", how does the author use Tessie's late arrival to help create suspense?
expeople1 [14]

The correct answer is "A".

It is previously known by the reader that all the villagers in town are gathering together for the traditional lottery which is celebrated every June 27. However, due to the small population in the town (only 300 people), there is an expectation for Tessie's arrival at the event, due to the fact that every resident is expected to participate. This is known when the person responsible for leading the event asks if there is anyone missing and she gets the immediate response that an individual named Dunbar is not there.

Alenkasestr [34]
The purpose of referring to Hrothgar and Grendel in terms of their relationship with God might be to contrast their way of seeing christianity and God. On the one hand, it seems that Hrothgar worships God but, on the other hand, Grendel seems to hate God.

What is the tone of the passage if must be, if the nebular hypothesis has any truth, older than our world; and long before this
alexdok [17]

According to the information in the fragment, it can be inferred that the tone is formal and scientific (option A).

How to identify the tone of a fragment?

To identify the tone of a fragment we must look at its writing style. For example, formal texts generally use a writing style in which they include technical and embellished words.

Informal texts, on the other hand, use simple language that everyone can easily understand. Additionally, the informal texts do not use specialized terms from any area nor do they refer to complex topics.

According to the above, it can be inferred that the tone of this fragment is formal due to the fact that it uses a complex and stylized language. Additionally, it is scientific because it refers to a scientific topic in which the reader must have prior knowledge to understand some ideas of the text.
