Fear of starvation--after a long ship journey and the ship getting off of route, the Puritans were running out of supplies. Upon arrival Puritans needed food and needed to get settled quickly. The first winter was the hardest on the Puritans and many died due to cold and lack of food.
Encounters with Native Americans--though the tribes the Puritans encountered were friendlier than others, they were unknown to Puritans, others than stories and books written by earlier explorers. Neithor of us agreed or liked Germany. So because of this their relationship grew stronger. Though the soviet union originally said they didn't want to fight them, they always wanted to. And the US wanted to stop them as well.
