B. the freedom to assemble together for peaceful meetings
this freedom is protected by the first amendment to the constitution, which reads "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
after the french and indian war, britain began to enforce
taxes on the colonies to help pay for the expensive war. additionally, britain
needed to take steps to keep the peace with Native Americans, so king –George
III issued the Royal Proclamation of 1763, which prevented colonists from
settling west of the appalachian mountains. these policies were unpopular with
the colonists and those grievances would lead to the american revolution.
After the war, the Radicals demanded civil rights for freed slaves, including measures ensuring suffrage. They initiated the various Reconstruction Acts as well as the Fourteenth Amendment and limited political and voting rights for ex-Confederate civil officials and military officers.
