He refused to be commander of the Paris garrison. It was an offered to him by Robespierre but
he decline the offer because he felt there was danger to accepting it. Rather he
took a secret mission to Genoa and when he came back, Robespierre was eliminated
and he was arrested but released on the grounds of lack of evidence.
