Some people who have personal connections to land believe it is sacred, or holy, and want to protect it. Other's may have a strong attatchment to it because of past memories. Or they may simply want to contribute protection to land because they consider it to be important.
I think that the meaning is that until all people are not free we can not be free until they are free too. So like is saying that we are not leaving no one behind.
