One large triangle leads the eye to the back of the raft and the dead men, and the small triangle leads the eye to the front of the raft where men are trying to signal a ship. The diagonal lines lead the eye towards the two key peaks, the huge wave to the left and the flag to the right. The artist uses dramatic colors to go with the scene of the painting and the tone is right.
