Senator Joseph McCarthy began the period of McCarthyism during the 1940s and 1950s. In the McCarthy period, hundreds of Americans blamed for having connections with communists and questioned before the government. Under McCarthyism, many arrested without proper evidence. The targets of suspicions were government employees. Many people lost their jobs while some were imprisoned.
