Why does Douglass say he came to loathe reading, as stated in Chapter 7 of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass?
ycow [4]
Douglass believes that learning to read is the way out of slavery. But sometimes when he thinks about it, maybe knowing how to read is more of a curse than a blessing. The more he learns with his reading, the more it hurts to know that he is a slave. He understands the injustice of his being a slave but at the same time there is nothing he can do about it.
