The North did not support slavery and as a result, tried to free Burns. In the attempt of liberating Burns, a guard was killed and none were convicted; however, the attempt was unsuccessful. It was only then that the South believed that the North could not fulfill their obligation to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
