The North was in favor of tariffs, while the South hated tariffs. This was because the North was focused on industrialization and the South was focused on agriculture.
A tariff is essentially a tax on foreign goods. It helped protect factories and businesses within the United States, as it made people want to buy from their own country since there was no foreign tax. This was <u>good for the North</u>, as more people were buying their products as opposed to them buying elsewhere. This was <u>not good for the South</u> though, as the South normally sold their goods overseas. This made their products look less desirable to foreign countries, as there was now a tax on them. The South also was buying a lot from overseas, but now it was more expensive.
The term Golden Age comes from Greek mythology and it refers to the initial stage of all the different human eras. In the Golden Age men lived in an ideal state, in an utopian dream, where humankind was pure and immortal. The Golden Age does not about war, work, the old age stage of life, nor sickness, and in this age, people died in a pacific dream. The main reason why there are no conflicts among men is because the land offers and produces goods in adequate quantities, in order to satisfy all men needs; men in the Golden Age lived a happy, easy life.
So, if there is no conflict between the humankind, if there is equality among men, prosperity and wealth for everyone in the same proportion, if there is no sickness, and if there is a cultural interaction between civilizations a Golden Age must rise. Humans will live a happy, calm life, without any worries; which will make perfect lives in an apparent perfect world. This is actually an utopic thought due to the fact that life is not perfect and that humans are confrontational, greedy and troubled.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Nevada was struggling with a 20-year depression. When the veins of gold, silver and copper dried up, the mining industry closed and people left Nevada. There were so few people left it hardly qualified to be called a state. In March 1931, Nevada legalized gambling in their desperate move to raise revenues. Also in that month, construction of the Hoover Dam began. This sure and steady supply of water and cheap electricity sent flocks of people back to Nevada. With the advent of World War II, the United States built their military bases in the West and Southern Nevada was a suitable venue. 1,000 homes were built by the federal government to house a workforce of 10,000 for a magnesium processing plant. After the war, resort hotels began to crop up across the Southern Nevadan desert. The interstate system made travelling to Nevada easy. After the creation of the Nevada Gaming Commission, the state started to attract legitimate investors. Nevada was one of the greatest economic success stories in the 20th century.
