Answer:

Ser is used in a simple way, to talk about WHAT something is (permanent state). To describe characteristics that are an essential part of the thing we're talking about. Estar is used to talk about HOW something is, so we use it for conditions, locations, emotions, and actions (temporary states).

From latin perspective...

Ser is from the Latin word esse, meaning "essence." Ser is also a noun that means "life" or "human being. Estar is from the Latin verb stare. In english we use it "to stand." Estar describes a noun's current state of being.

Ser is about WHAT something is. Estar is about HOW something is.
